Found Animals

Animals that are found in the City of Roanoke, Counties of Botetourt and Roanoke, and the Town of Vinton can be brought to the Regional Center for Animal Care and Protection (RCACP) for their stray holds. We are the only open intake municipal shelter in the Roanoke Valley that accepts stray companion animals.

Keeping a Found Pet at Your Home

Members of the public may keep a found animal at their home for the stray hold if they prefer. To do this, you must compete a Found Animals Form and/or the contact the shelter at 540-344-4922 and report that the animal has been found. A Found Animals Form will need to be completed and kept on file for 30 days at RCACP. If the owner of the animal is found, the shelter staff will contact you to release the animal to the rightful owner.

Please be aware that residents who chose to keep the animal during the stray hold are responsible for the care and well-being of the animal, including medical care and keeping the animal contained during the stray hold.
